Welcome to Spring

Time to get the boing back

Let me help you bounce into Spring with a September Bootcamp, a 2 Day Detox Program🤸 & a Spring Flexibility challenge 🥕

Are you ready to get super fit? Are you ready to detox your life and body? Are you ready to improve your flexibility, mental clarity and digestion? Are you ready to get away from bad winter habits? Are you ready to feel the warmth in the air and to start to have longer days with more energy?

Spring can be seen as the season between seasons, it is the pause between summer (highest energy) and winter (lowest energy) and because the energy has such an expansive nature it best supports your body to expel unwanted toxins and rebuild, to repair and nourish your joints. It is the season of change, for rebirth, renewal and regrowth.

Let’s have a quick look at the Natural Element Health theory of spring. Despite its recent surge in popularity, fasting is a practice that dates back centuries and plays a central role in many cultures and religions. Fasting allows your body to take a break from the normal grind of digestion and switch into repair, restoration and healing mode.

Fasting is defined as “abstinence” from all or some foods or drinks for a set period of time, there are many different ways of fasting.

In general, most types of fasts are performed over 2 days, 10 days, or 6 weeks for maximum healing.

Intermittent fasting, on the other hand, involves cycling between periods of eating and fasting, on my detox we will be doing a 2-day fast with 16:8 hours of fasting: eating. I am recommending a 4-week period of clean eating to really maximise your health.

Fasting has been shown to have many health benefits, for example, from increased weight loss to better brain function.

The seasons all have a direct effect on our health, and the seasons affect the balance in our bodies as well as the external climate surrounding us.

I love Spring, it always makes me just feel happy, to feel the warmth in the air and to start to have longer days with more energy around providing me with more energy. I also love not having to wear so many clothes and be able to wake up and get up and not feel like diving back under the doona.

Chinese Medicine encourages us to make changes in our lives to match environmental changes. This is how we stay healthy and balanced. It also helps us to prevent illness and imbalance.

Spring Self-Care and Hayfever Tips

Heading into this spring of 2022, we can still see many cases of COVID-19 and influenza cases. Colds, RSVs, and other respiratory infections are making the rounds, as well. moving into spring is also when we see lots of allergies, especially hay fever. Do you go “oh no, it’s spring and my allergies will be bad?”

Spring in Chinese Medicine is the season that relates to the Wood element and the Liver and Gallbladder organ systems. Both Spring and the Wood Element are associated with rejuvenation and new growth. Just as you can see new growth appearing on trees and plants after going into a dormant state over winter, this is also a time for us to start getting back into the world after hibernating through the cold months. It is therefore a great time to “spring clean” in your life, get rid of the old habits that haven’t been working for you, and start with new healthy ones.

In Chinese Medicine, WIND is considered one of the major contributors to illness. It is understood to disrupt the circulation of our defensive or protective mechanisms and is involved in conditions such as hay fever, the common cold, headaches and stiff necks amongst others.

Wind obstructs the nose and it impairs the diffusing and descending of Lung-Qi: this causes sneezing and congested nasal mucosa. The sensitive mucus membranes of the nose become inflamed, which causes swelling so the phlegm and mucus created can become harder and harder to expel.

Research shows that inflammation may be involved in the development of chronic conditions, such as heart disease, cancer and rheumatoid arthritis.

Research has shown that reducing processed foods, sugar alcohol, flour products and animal products has greatly reduced the inflammation in us, together with chronic long-term health issues. Doing a seasonal detox is a way to combat inflammation in your body.

Spring Self-Care Tips for Hayfever 👃🏼

1.    🌬 Stay out of the wind

Try to stay out of the wind or at least keep your neck and shoulders covered with a scarf when it’s windy, even a light one if it’s warm. This protects the vulnerable meridians that lie on the neck and shoulders from “invading wind”.

2.   🌸 Avoid high pollen days

On high pollen count days, wear wrap-around sunglasses, avoid hanging washing on the line and shower after being outside if possible.

3.    🤧 Protect your Mucous Membranes

Using a saline nasal spray such as Fess or a Neti pot to rinse the pollen particles out of your nasal passages can help. Those little hairs in our nostrils are there for a reason. Truly. They trap foreign particles like pollens. If you’re allergic to pollens, and they stay in your nose for hours on end, your immune system will start fighting them. Firstly by producing more mucous to flush them out. So give your immune system a helping hand and flush them out without having to go to the mucous party. 🧹

4.   🥗 Cooked food to aid digestion⚡️

Keep adding warm, cooked foods to your diet and keep cold and raw foods to a minimum. In Chinese Medicine digestion loves to be warm and too many cold and raw foods can damage the digestive organs, impacting on many areas of our health from energy, digestion, fertility and sleep.

5. 🐄 Decrease Dairy Foods 💪🏼

Limit dairy foods if you get nasal congestion or runny noses as these foods increase mucous production in the body. Reducing sugar, caffeine, red wine and wheat products can also be useful as these foods can trigger histamine release and inflammatory responses in the body. Tomatoes, oranges, cheese and chocolate (unfortunately!) are other culprits often associated with allergies.

6. 🍑Increase natural anti-histamine foods

Increase foods high in the natural anti-histamine Vitamin C, like kiwi fruit, strawberries, broccoli, kale, rockmelon, and cauliflower just to name a few.

7. 😱Spring is Unpredictable

Don’t trust the weather! It is still going to cool down in the evenings for some time yet here in Sydney. So not the time to leave your coat behind. I love doing the layers in spring !!!

8. ❤️Self-Care is important

Get some Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce hay fever symptoms, inflammation and immune responses. While acute inflammation is a normal immune process used to help fight off infections, chronic inflammation can have serious consequences for your health. Find out more about booking a treatment with Lisa to discuss your health concerns.
